A Day of French Immersion with Marie and Alain in Fayence, Provence

BY MARIE • 24 August 2026

What is a French immersion homestay in Provence really like? The best way to find out is to live it, hour by hour. Here is a day with Marie and Alain in Fayence, in the Var: morning lessons on the terrace, Provençal meals, afternoon discoveries. And this time, you are the one living it.

Breakfast on the terrace

From the moment you wake up, the smell of toasted bread fills the house. Served on the terrace whenever the weather allows, breakfast is generous and varied: savoury, with eggs, avocado and cheese, or sweet, with butter and homemade or artisanal jams.

It is your first chance of the day to learn without realising it, in a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere, to the sound of birds and cicadas.

A whiteboard is set up on the terrace. Throughout the day, Marie fills it with vocabulary, rules and explanations. Take a photo of it with your phone: you can go over it all again later, with a clear head.

Morning lessons: three hours at your own pace

Then come the lessons: you learn French with a teacher who adapts everything to your level, your interests, your goals and your needs. The sessions that prepare you for visits to some of the region’s most emblematic sites (a vineyard, a perfumery, an olive oil mill) are especially valuable: you build vocabulary, you learn about winemaking or perfume creation, and you understand the afternoon’s guided tour in French far better.

To do this, Marie draws on a variety of materials, often videos, offering a virtual-first immersion. It is fun, comfortable and highly effective for remembering the essentials. This way of linking lessons to real life is at the heart of Azur Immersion’s teaching method.

Studying grammar rules is sometimes less exciting, but necessary. Here again, Marie uses playful activities, role plays and engaging materials. Learning should mix the useful with the enjoyable.

The coffee or tea break is always welcome: a moment to relax in the middle of three fairly intensive hours of lessons. And if you start to feel tired, Marie suggests continuing the lesson later in the day, or the next day. She keeps a close eye on your concentration and adjusts the pace of the lessons accordingly. It makes all the difference.

Lunch: practising French at the table

After the lessons, Marie often prepares lunch on her own, giving you time to unwind. Make the most of it: in the pool, the jacuzzi, a deckchair in the sun or the cosy living room.

Lunch is made with fresh, local produce, adapted to your tastes and served the French way: starter, main course, cheese and dessert. Wine is always offered; you may prefer to save it for dinner, so you can fully enjoy the afternoon visit.

This meal is another opportunity to practise French without feeling like you are studying. Conversation flows: local cuisine, French culture, current affairs. It is also a chance to compare with your own country and its traditions. Such enriching exchanges!

The afternoon: visiting a Côtes de Provence vineyard

Each afternoon discovery is more interesting than the last. Today, you are off to a vineyard in the Côtes de Provence appellation. Did you think Provence only produced rosé? Its red and white wines, made in smaller quantities, are also of great quality.

The guided tour begins with the story of the estate: a family story spanning several generations, driven by a passion for sharing the character of their wines. You then discover where the wine is made. Thanks to the morning’s preparatory work, you understand the explanations and even dare to ask the winemaker a few questions. A real sense of achievement.

The tasting: five wines, discussed in French.

The visit ends with a tasting of five wines, still practising French, almost without noticing, completely immersed in the moment. You can buy a bottle to take home and extend your discovery of the wines of Provence. Marie chooses one too, to go with tonight’s Provençal dinner.

You leave more confident in your French and richer in knowledge, both wine-related and linguistic. And the vineyard is just one of the many cultural activities included in your stay: the Grasse perfumery, hilltop villages, olive oil mills, the museums of the French Riviera.

The cooking workshop: anchoïade and tapenade

Peeling, chopping, tasting: kitchen vocabulary learned by doing.

Back in Fayence, Marie suggests cooking together. No need to be a seasoned cook: learning a Provençal recipe to make again at home is a lovely prospect.

On the menu: anchoïade and tapenade, two Provençal specialities. The first is a sauce made from anchovies, the second a paste of green or black olives. An excellent exercise for enriching your culinary skills. Once the preparations are in the fridge, you peel and cut raw vegetables into small sticks together, to be enjoyed that evening.

After the workshop, a little rest by the pool before Alain comes home from work. As soon as he arrives, he comes to greet you and ask how your day went. He likes to joke that Marie is surely far less demanding with you than she is with him. His warmth, like Marie’s, makes you feel at home here.

Dinner and an evening with the family

Charcuterie, cheese and sun-ripened vegetables: dinner begins.

Then comes dinner, and the chance to try raw vegetables dipped in the anchoïade and the green and black tapenades you prepared together. To complete this Provençal dinner, Marie has bought a pissaladière from a local caterer, as there was no time to make one: a local speciality resembling a pizza base topped with slow-cooked onions and anchovies. Delicious. The wine chosen at the estate that very afternoon pairs beautifully with the meal.

Then comes the cheese board, an essential part of French tradition. If you enjoy wine, Alain will be delighted to introduce you to other estates and other regions, always matched to the food.

Dinner ends, but the conversation carries on, glass in hand. Marie and Alain are open-minded: no subject is off limits. Do remember to get some rest, though: tomorrow promises to be just as intense and captivating, with a visit to a perfumery in Grasse on the programme.

Another day of immersion in Provence, and you already feel a little more at ease in French.
