Immersion at your teacher’s home is undoubtedly the most effective way to make rapid progress in French. Yet few people start there: online lessons are often the first step. Here is how to build your path, from video lessons to an immersion stay, with John’s story to show the way.
Starting with online French lessons

Online lessons offer valuable flexibility and independence, especially if you have work or family commitments. You learn at your own pace, from wherever you like, with no travel time: a real advantage when lessons have to fit into a busy schedule.
The financial commitment is also lighter than for an immersion stay. A gentle way to begin, without compromising on the quality of your learning.
A video lesson as lively as face-to-face
A lesson by videoconference is just as interactive and effective as one in person. It is personalised and adapted to your needs, whatever your level.
I work with authentic materials on a wide range of themes: French society, current affairs, health, the environment, art, sport… always linked to your interests and expectations. The Teams platform lets us share documents, audio and video, do interactive exercises and correct them instantly, all without pressure and in good spirits.
As for the timetable, it adapts to your availability and to the time zones that sometimes lie between us.
A free assessment hour: tailor-made from the start
In the 10-hour lesson package available on the site, a one-hour assessment is offered free of charge: we get to know each other, and I assess your level, your needs and your expectations. This first exchange then allows me to suggest a way of working that suits you perfectly. In short: tailor-made!
The immersion stay, your next step
After a few weeks, depending on your progress, learning online, however interactive it may be, might no longer be enough. You will then be tempted by a stay the French way: total immersion in the language and the culture, with daily, more intensive practice. We will prepare this stay together so that it matches your wishes and goals, and puts you in the best conditions to keep progressing. If you are wondering how long this takes, our article on how long it takes to learn French gives a realistic answer, level by level.

Immersion will give you the chance to apply your skills and test your knowledge in real situations: you will grow in confidence and consolidate what you have learnt. You will be in direct contact with other native speakers, through enriching activities and shared cultural visits. And you will settle in immediately, helped by the relationship of trust we will already have built online. To prepare for your first exchanges, you can start with our list of common French phrases for a stay in France.
The lessons during your stay will follow on from what we will have worked on together: that is the heart of my immersion method. Because they are daily, they will help you memorise vocabulary more easily and develop reflexes.
I will then no longer be just your teacher, but also your host, welcoming you to share my daily life and my family’s, and your guide to our magnificent region and its rich and varied activities. You will combine learning and pleasure, in a warm and caring family environment: the joy of learning without feeling like you are studying.
John’s story: daring to speak French
The best way to illustrate all this is to tell you the story of John, a retired man I taught online for several years. We met for an hour a week to talk about different subjects or revise a few tricky grammar points. These lessons allowed him to maintain his level and communicate in everyday situations during his holidays in France.
Yet every time he came back, I could sense he was disappointed and unhappy with himself. He would tell me about encounters that were often frustrating: he had not understood the person he was talking to, and had not dared to ask them to repeat. Sometimes he wanted to express an opinion, but the words would not come and he froze. John used to say it was easier to talk with me, because he knew me and knew I would not judge him.
So I suggested an immersion stay, so he could practise with confidence in a kind and reassuring environment. He quickly felt at ease in our home, daring to chat from the very first day with Alain, my husband, attentive and understanding.

Over the week, John’s progress was remarkable. At the beginning of his stay, he held back during the guided visits around the region: he listened and nodded. Then he found the courage to ask a question, then two. Being understood and answered helped him, step by step, to feel more confident.
By the end of his stay, he had turned a corner: he dared to hold a conversation without stopping at a missing word or a tricky grammar rule. He could be proud of himself!
The following year, he came back to France for his holidays and rediscovered the ease and pleasure of chatting in French, just as during his immersion stay. His holiday was a great success, and he told me all about it with real enthusiasm.
